Four beautiful, badass women lose their heads in this irreverent, girl-powered comedy set during the French Revolution’s Reign of Terror. Playwright Olympe de Gouges, assassin Charlotte Corday, former queen (and fan of ribbons) Marie Antoinette, and Haitian rebel Marianne Angelle hang out, murder Marat, and try to beat back the extremist insanity in 1793 Paris. This grand and dream-tweaked comedy is about violence and legacy, art and activism, feminism and terrorism, compatriots and chosen sisters, and how we go about changing the world. It’s a true story. Or total fiction. Or a play about a play. Or a raucous resurrection…that ends in a song and a scaffold.
Content warnings: the play has references to violence, colonialism and racism.
Character Descriptons:
Olympe de Gouges (Female, 30s-40s, any race/ethnicity)
A badass French playwright and vocal activist. She is a theater-nerd, passionate, witty. Yearns to create art that will inspire social change but struggles with her own doubts, fears and loss of personal freedom. She has an odd fascination with puppets.
Marianne Angelle (Female, 30s-40s, black/various ethnicity)
A badass black rebel and spy, fighting for the freedom of enslaved people in the French Caribbean. She’s fierce, grounded, and utterly committed to her cause, balancing her deep love for her people with the harsh reality of revolution. Comfortable with brief singing.
Charlotte Corday (Female, 20s- early 30s, any race/ethnicity)
A badass country woman and aspiring assassin. Righteous and hyper-focused on killing Jean-Paul Marat in a violent way for a revolutionary cause. She’s willing to make the ultimate sacrifice to save thousands. Never been kissed. Comfortable with brief singing.
Marie Antoinette (Female, 30s-40s, any race/ethnicity)
The slightly-less badass former queen of France. She is bubbly, self-centered, totally unaware, unintentionally rude, but has moments of depth and vulnerability. Grapples with her place in history and legacy. Never had a friend. Comfortable with brief singing.
