SHOW SUMMARY:

Take something wildly valuable, add a dash of family conflict, a sprinkle of jaded stamp dealer, a healthy serving of scheming hood and hot-tempered black market dealer, and you have the recipe for Theresa Rebeck’s taught, twisty and tumultuous play, Mauritius.

Following their mother’s death, two estranged half-sisters battle over a book of rare stamps, which may or may not include the crown jewel of philately. Despite one sister’s insistence that the collection stay in the family, the other sister seeks out a guaranteed cash windfall. Enter three seedy men who will do anything to get their hands on this rare collection. A seemingly simple sale becomes complicated, dangerous and violent. Trust is questioned, motives are illuminated and the stakes are raised to explosive levels.

CHARACTERS (3 men, 2 women):

Jackie (25-40+) – The younger sister who took care of her mother and is looking to sell the stamps. She’s bruised, yet head-strong. She’s feisty, yet jaded. She’s passionate, yet troubled.

Mary (35-50) – The older sister who abandoned the family and wants to keep the stamp collection. She’s genteel, yet guilt-ridden. She’s smart, yet naive. She avoids conflict, but she’s stubborn.

Sterling (40-65) – The boss. An intelligent and wealthy dealer of (insert illegal goods here). A passionate stamp collector with a hair-trigger. He’s used to getting his way.

Dennis (30-45) – A hood. Slick-talking and always in debt. A con-man with his hand in a number of schemes. Easily charmed by someone like Jackie. Just smart enough to get himself in trouble.

Phillip (35-55) – Owner of the stamp shop. Life-worn and jaded. A stamp expert, but his knowledge inevitably makes money for someone else. Socially awkward and blunt. A loner.

Note: Character ages are what should “read” to be believable. Jackie and Mary are half-sisters. Mary should be at least 8 to 18 years older than Jackie. The men only need to fall within age ranges that make sense as a group. That is, Dennis should be close to Jackie’s age and younger than Sterling. Phillip needs to be believable as a stamp expert.
