DEATHTRAP By Ira Levin

Directed by Russell R Greene

June 24th and 25th at 7 PM. Callbacks will be held following the Open Call on the 25th.

Deathtrap opens Friday, September 13th, 2013 (nice touch, no?) and runs September 13, 14, 20, 21, 22, 27, 28

Readings from the script will be used so it is strongly recommended that those auditioning are familiar with the text/plot. To request a copy of the script or if you have any questions please contact the Director, Russell R. Greene at rrgreenester@ymail.com

How far will someone go to have a hit play? If Ira Levin is to be believed, they will go all the way, some paying the ultimate price…

Sydney, the one mega-hit wonder, is in desperate need of another theatrical ‘hit’ to secure his legacy. Age 40-60, polished, dashing, cravat-wearing kind of guy. Very physical, requires 2 fights, falling on floor and carrying bodies. He is ‘on stage’ even when he is home. Must convince us he is capable of what he actually does. Believeable fight scenes. Clever, passionate, avarice and lust characteristics.

Myra, Sydney’s too loving and too caring wife, who will do whatever it takes to support her husband even though her heart is weak. Age match to Sydney. Sophisticated, but fits with her Martha Stewart like surroundings, some physicality – must die and fall to the floor, must be able to assist carrying a body. Sweet, caring, emotional, nervous, skittish. Should not appear too dim, or stupid. Sweet, supportive, too trusting and too loving characteristics.

Clifford, the handsome earnest grad student who has written the ‘next great stage thriller’ and looks to Sydney for guidance and tutoring. Age 25-35. Handsome glasses wearing, College-type look, wears sport coat with boots and jeans. Very physical. Requires 2 fights, falling on floor and stairs. Looks physically fit. He is sure he’s the smartest/best looking man in the room. He wears the mask so well he comes across as the victim and the almost victor. Believeable fight scenes. Calculating, confident, ambition and avarice characteristics.

Helga Van Ten Dorp, the all seeing psychic next door whose unworldly visions are just wee bit off the mark. Age 35-60+. She is quirky yet practical. Some physicality – a struggle at the end with the lawyer. She must be comical yet credible. A true believer but Clueless (sees the forest, still runs into the trees).

Porter, Sydney and Myra’s lawyer and friend, the voice of reason and caution. Age 50+, 3 piece Suit (tweed vest) and bow tie guy.Professional yet long-time personal friendSolid, observant, normal. Proves to be Human after all

What WILL Sydney do? Will Myra go along? Is Clifford all he appears to be? Is Helga for real or a nightclub act gone very wrong? Will anyone heed Porter’s advice?

Rehearsals to commence the week of July 14,

CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS: Suburban Holidays is Back!!

Quannapowitt Players is seeking one-act play submissions from New England playwrights for their New Works Playwright Festival Suburban Holidays II, scheduled for December 2013. Submissions must be received by July 31, 2013

Have you seen The Nutcracker too many times? Can you recite the speeches by every ghost in A Christmas Carol by heart? It’s time for some new holiday traditions! Suburban Holidays II explores the theme of the holiday season in whatever form that means for the playwright, in a town “very much like Reading, Massachusetts.” As this festival is being produced in December, a preference for date-appropriate holidays (Christmas, Chanukah, Kwanzaa, etc.). We’re looking for unique perspectives on what a holiday-themed play can be, as an alternative to A Christmas Carol and other traditional holiday shows.

* Plays will be fully produced, with a full set, costumes, props, sound cues and rep lighting. The set will consist of two-three interior room spaces (such as a living room, dining room, kitchen, etc.).

* One-act plays of any length will be considered and there are no restrictions on cast size.

* Original musicals will also be considered with musical accompaniment restricted to a keyboardist.

* Playwrights may submit up to three plays. If more than three are sent, then none will be considered.

* Preference is given to playwrights from Massachusetts, though any New England playwright (MA, CT, NH, ME, VT) may submit. If you are not a resident of New England, your play will not be considered for this festival.

* Plays must be submitted electronically in MS Word or PDF format, written in standard play format

* Plays must be the original works of the playwrights and unpublished at the time of production. Preference is given to unproduced works, but works with limited production runs will be considered.

* Playwrights whose pieces are chosen will be notified via email and selections will also be posted on the Quannapowitt Players website.

* Send plays to the Festival Producer/Director, Patrick Cleary at patrickjamescleary@gmail.com. Paper copies of plays will not be accepted.

If you have any questions about this festival or the guideline submissions, please contact Patrick Cleary and include the subject line Suburban Holidays.

There are so many interesting people who have graced the QP stage, designed, schlepped and given their passion freely to make QP the best community theater possible. Some of these generous folks still live in New England or have moved to far off places like California, but so many do other interesting artistic things in their life, so we have decided to highlight some of these folks from time to time.

There first two QP folks to be spotlighted are Mary Carrig and Jon Sachs.

Mary is the driving force behind the Conejo Valley Shakespeare Society’s Youth Shakespeare Company in California. Her goal was to keep creating exciting ways for children to understand and love Shakespeare the way she does. Mary graced the QP stage many times as one of our favorite Shakespeare actresses. Her youth group has been chosen to do the voice-over work for an interactive iPad app that will coincide with a children’s book of songs that are portrayed as being sung by characters from Shakespeare.

Read more and see the ipad voice-over video: http://www.vcstar.com/news/2013/feb/06/conejo-valley-youth-actors-lend-voices-to-ipad/#ixzz2KyhvnjKp

Jon has been taking the exceptional QP Headshots and Production photos for many years now, in addition to his professional photography, graphic art and web design business. In his spare time Jon just takes photographs for the pleasure of it! Recently he stumbled upon a group of over 50 old farm trucks sitting on a dirt lot in Sprague, Washington that belong to a fellow named Dave Jones. He fell in love with Dave’s old trucks and the two of them decided to work together to let more people know about them. So Jon has created a beautiful book of photographs of these amazing charming old trucks. See the details at Jon’s website www.jonsachs.com

An uproarious story of two bumbling Alabama brothers who have never shot a duck but they think they shot an angel! As they lament their fate in the local swamp, they are chased by a cynical tabloid journalist and his reluctant photographer who don’t believe any of it—until they discover feathers, wings and a tiara. It is a story with a half-man/half-alligator, sibling rivalry, a tawdry media boss, a Gasmart cashier and a ghost. As the chase to find the angel builds so does the hilarity! This eventually heartwarming play interweaves love, loss, riffs on cultural stereotypes and race relations and builds to a surprising ending that few playgoers see coming! The play premiered 2004 at the Purple Rose Theater in Chelsea, Michigan, a theater started by actor Jeff Daniels.

Character descriptions:

Sandy (late 30s, 40-ish): a tabloid journalist. Cynical, a little jaded, a little self-hating. Sandy had plans, and they did not involve tracking would-be Angel shooters for The Weekly World and Globe.

Lenny (30-ish, African American): a photographer. Has even less desire than Sandy to be on this particular assignment.

Lester (30s): a tabloid publisher. Fast talking, fast walking, always looking for an angle. Lester knows what his readers want, and Sandy better get it for him – yesterday.

Duane (30s, southern accent): one of the Duck Hunters. Duane’s not the brightest bulb in the chandelier, but he’s trying.

Duwell (30s, Southern accent): the other Duck Hunter, and Duane’s younger brother. Duwell is a little dimmer than Duane, but sweeter with it.

Woman (late 20s, Southern accent): sweet, thoughtful, supportive, but some spark and spunk as well.

Kansas (teenager, 17. Southern accent): Smart girl with a smart mouth – but likeable.

Gator Man/Phil (no age specified): Gator Man. A strong, physically comic actor who moves well. Fun role without a lot of lines, but lots of presence.

The Voice/Loan Officer (40s). Commanding vocal presence; actor is mostly heard, not seen – the inverse of Gator Man.

Directed by Kristin Hughes

PRODUCTION DATES: April 26, 27 AND May 3, 4, 5, 10, 11, 2013

Featuring: Sara Jane Burns, Edmund Golaski, Adam Heroux, Jennifer Hughes, Eric LaMarche, Shawn Maguire, Jason Myatt, Brian Sensale & Emily Sheeran

In a stark white room, assisted by a skeptical doctor, he plays a cat-and-mouse game with her. As time runs out, he brings in the last living survivor of the disaster, an elder woman who has lived in seclusion for 75 years.
