Katharine Gerard – Just this side of 70. Brittle and caustic woman, mink-clad and defiant, but inwardly sad — and terrified that her son will be forgotten by:
Cal Porter – In the neighborhood of 50. Andre’s former life-partner, who has moved on to a new and happy life. He is now married to:
Will Ogden – 30s. Cal’s younger and handsome husband. Not, however, a boy-toy or appendage of Cal. This is a strong man in his own right, and a very good father to:
Bud Ogden-Porter – 6 going on 40. A precocious, but thankfully not precious little boy. Full of questions and demanding of straight answers. (Regarding this character’s age: the actor may be older than 6, as long as it is believable that he is younger).
After 20 years, Katharine Gerard, the mother of Cal Porter’s deceased lover, Andre, shows up uninvited and unexpected at Cal Porter’s Manhattan high-rise. Cal is now married to a writer, Will, and they have a young son, Bud.
The visit is ostensibly to bring Cal a diary that Andre kept. Soon, though, it becomes apparent that Katharine is in reality looking for something…. Closure? An apology? Revenge? Terrence McNally explores these themes and more in his magnificent script.
